US President Donald Trump has made it clear that he wants a deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine by Aug. 8, the United States told the United Nations Security Council today.
"Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and a lasting peace. It's time for a deal. President Trump has made it clear that this must be completed by Aug. 8. The United States is prepared to take additional measures to ensure peace," top US diplomat John Kelly told the 15-member council.
On Tuesday, Trump said the United States would begin imposing tariffs and other measures against Russia "in 10 days from today" if Moscow does not show progress toward ending the war in Ukraine.
Kiev and Moscow have held three rounds of talks in Istanbul this year, resulting in prisoner exchanges and body swaps, but with no concrete progress toward ending the conflict that has lasted more than three years.
“We intend to continue the talks in Istanbul,” said Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, but added: “Despite these meetings in Istanbul, the war current has not disappeared in the West... We still hear the voices of those who believe that diplomacy is just a way to criticize Russia and put pressure on it.”
Ukraine’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Khrystyna Hajovyshyn, said Russia should be responded to with “unity, determination and action.”
“We demand a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the principles of the UN Charter and nothing less. We repeat – a complete, immediate and unconditional ceasefire is essential. This is the first step towards stopping Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” she told the council.
