Trump: Xi called me; China: No, but US reached out to us about tariffs

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The United States has reached out to China seeking talks on President Donald Trump's 145 percent tariffs, a Chinese state media account said on the social media platform today, the latest report on possible moves toward tariff talks.

"The US has proactively reached out to China through multiple channels, hoping to hold talks on the tariff issue," Yuyuan Tantian posted on the social media platform Weibo, citing anonymous sources.

Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said yesterday: "As far as I know, there have been no talks or negotiations between China and the US on tariffs."

Trump claims Xi called him, Beijing says no

Trump said in an interview with US media published last Friday that his administration is in talks with China to reach a tariff deal and that Chinese President Xi Jinping called him.

Beijing has repeatedly denied that such talks are underway in the past week, accusing Washington of “misleading the public.”

Yuyuan Tantian is not one of the most authoritative accounts linked to state media. The Global Times, a newspaper owned by the ruling Communist Party, has often been the first to report on China’s next moves in trade disputes in recent years.

Trump said yesterday that he believes there is a “very good chance” that his administration could reach a deal with China, hours after Xi urged China, the world’s second-largest economy, to take steps to adapt to changes on the international stage, without directly mentioning the United States.
