October 20, 2025 — Global
A widespread internet disruption affected millions of users worldwide today due to an outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS). The outage began early Monday morning around 3:11 a.m. Eastern Time, primarily impacting the US-EAST-1 region in Virginia — one of AWS’s largest infrastructure hubs.
Impact Across Services
The outage caused service interruptions and slowdowns across multiple platforms and sectors, including:
Social Media & Messaging: Snapchat, Signal, WhatsApp
Gaming: Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale
Financial Services: Coinbase, Robinhood, Venmo
Streaming & Entertainment: Amazon Prime Video, Alexa, Apple TV
Productivity & Collaboration: Zoom, Canva, Microsoft 365
Retail & E-Commerce: Amazon online store, Kindle services
Several UK institutions such as Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, BT, and HMRC websites also faced service disruptions. In the U.S., apps including McDonald’s and Perplexity experienced downtime.
Cause and Recovery
AWS identified a Domain Name System (DNS) issue as the root cause, which temporarily affected the translation of web addresses into IP addresses. By approximately 6:35 a.m. Eastern Time, most AWS operations were restored, though some services continued to experience delays due to request backlogs.
Wider Implications
The outage highlighted the internet’s reliance on a small number of cloud providers. Experts warn that centralization of digital infrastructure increases vulnerability to disruptions, prompting renewed discussions on building resilient and diversified cloud systems.
AWS has not provided further public comments beyond updates on its status page.
