Humanitarian aid arrives in insufficient quantities in Gaza, situation remains critical

SOURCE:ANTENA M- AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

At least 16 people have been killed and dozens wounded in the latest Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian territory's Civil Defense said. The Israeli military claims that it has targeted "military targets" and "eliminated several terrorists" in the past 24 hours, while the air force has hit over 75 targets across the enclave.

After more than two months of a complete blockade, 107 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered the Gaza Strip yesterday, the Israeli Defense Ministry's Cogat agency said. This followed an increase in deliveries in previous days, with 100 UN trucks on Wednesday, 93 on Tuesday and around ten on Monday.

The Gaza Civil Defense reported 16 deaths and dozens of injuries in overnight Israeli attacks. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said the death toll in the enclave had reached 53,762.

18:33 British Airways to suspend flights to Israel until end of July

British Airways announced today that it had suspended all flights to Israel until the end of July, as reported by public radio Kan.

It was initially announced that flights would be suspended until mid-June, after a Houthi rocket was fired at Ben Gurion Airport.

15:58 UNRWA: Humanitarian aid slow to arrive

The head of UNRWA says no one should be surprised by the sight of precious aid being looted, stolen or "disappeared", as the humanitarian situation in Gaza is extremely difficult.

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philip Lazarini, said on the X network that no one should be surprised, let alone shocked, by the scenes of looting or loss of humanitarian aid. He recalled that for more than eleven weeks, the inhabitants of Gaza have been living in conditions of hunger and severe shortages of basic necessities, especially water and medicine.

Lazarini expressed regret that the aid currently arriving is only a “needle in a haystack” and stressed that the only way to prevent the catastrophic situation from worsening further is a continuous and significant flow of humanitarian aid. According to him, the minimum needed is between 500 and 600 trucks per day, which is the same amount of aid that was arriving during the ceasefire.

14:44 German government spokesman: Aid arriving in Gaza is “too little, too late and too slow”

German government spokesman Sebastian Hille has spoken out about the small amounts of aid Israel has allowed into the Gaza Strip, after easing its devastating aid blockade that has left many Palestinians in Gaza on the brink of starvation.

Hille said the aid Israel is now allowing is “too little, too late and too slow” (the Israeli military said earlier today that 107 aid trucks had entered Gaza on Thursday; before the war, an average of about 500 trucks entered daily).

“It is now important to increase the amount significantly... and to ensure that this aid actually reaches the people, so that the suffering in the Gaza Strip can finally end,” the BBC quotes him as saying.

13:20 Golan speaks out after being expelled from the army

Israeli General Yair Golan has responded after the defense minister expelled him from the army's reserve corps. On his X network account, the former deputy chief of staff of the Israeli army and current leader of the left wrote: "The last time I wore the uniform of the Israeli army was October 7, when I went to the south to save civilians after the terrible collapse of your regime in terms of security. I promise that I will continue to do everything I can for Israel and its security, and I am sure that you will continue to flatter Netanyahu and his poisonous machinery," after the defense minister announced that he had issued the order for Golan to be expelled from the reserve corps.

The decision came after Golan said on Tuesday: "A healthy country does not wage war on civilians, does not kill babies for fun, and does not plan to expel the population," alluding to the government-backed "voluntary evacuation" plan for Palestinians from Gaza.

12:39 After sharp criticism of the war in Gaza, Yair Golan expelled from the Israeli army

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced today that General Yair Golan has been expelled from the Israeli army.

"In view of the behavior of Yair Golan," who said on Tuesday that "a healthy state does not have baby-killing as a hobby," the Israeli defense minister announced that he had ordered the army not to call him up for reserve service again, and that he was banned from wearing the IDF uniform and entering bases, Israeli media, including Haaretz, reported.

The statements by the former deputy chief of staff and leader of the Democratic Party have drawn fierce criticism from members of Benjamin Netanyahu's government, some of whom have called for an investigation into incitement to hatred. Centrist Yair Lapid, leader of the main opposition party, also condemned his words.

"There is no place for people like Golan in public life, and I expect all public figures, whether from the right or the left, to condemn and distance themselves from him his behavior," Katz concluded in a statement.

12:33 More than 50 Palestinians missing after deadly Israeli airstrike on apartment building

More than 50 Palestinian civilians remain missing under rubble after an Israeli airstrike on an apartment building in northern Gaza, Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal said on Friday.

Civil Defense teams described the scene as a "horrific massacre." At least four people were killed in the Israeli airstrike.

The Gaza Civil Defense is the main emergency service, along with ambulance crews, and regularly helps pull the living and dead from the rubble after Israeli bombings.

Basal wrote on Telegram: "Four martyrs have been found, six people have been rescued, while more than 50 citizens are still missing under the rubble of the four-member Dardouna family's house in the Jabalia camp, at the Al-Journ junction."

The search has been suspended due to a lack of heavy machinery needed to access those still trapped under the rubble.

12:16 Trump Builds Alliances Without Israel, Netanyahu More Isolated

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been increasingly sidelined as US President Donald Trump turns his attention to easing tensions with Iran and strengthening cooperation with Sunni Gulf states. Netanyahu, who once saw himself as a key player in reshaping the Middle East, with a focus on crushing Iran and Hamas, now faces a new balance of power that threatens his strategic goals and pushes Israel to the margins of diplomatic channels.

This is the assessment of today's foreign policy analysis published this morning by the Parisian newspaper Le Monde, which details how Netanyahu's hard-line approach is increasingly at odds with Trump's new regional agenda. During his visit to Riyadh, Doha and Abu Dhabi from May 13 to 16, Trump positioned the Gulf monarchies and Turkey as key players in the new peace architecture, almost completely bypassing Israel in these talks.

The US president has left Netanyahu out of negotiations with Iran, direct agreements with Hamas on the release of hostages, a ceasefire agreement with the Houthi rebels in Yemen, and even the process of easing sanctions on Syria. Trump has also supported dialogue with the interim Syrian president, further reducing Israeli influence on that front.

Although Netanyahu recently dropped his demand for a complete shutdown of Iran’s nuclear program, he continues to insist on a complete ban on uranium enrichment, which runs counter to the positions of both Tehran and Washington. Analysts such as Laura Foucher believe that Netanyahu is using maximalist demands to stall progress in the negotiations, but Trump’s negotiator Steve Witkoff has shown no interest in Israeli objections.

Meanwhile, Trump’s strategy separates the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel from broader US-Riyadh cooperation, undermining what was once a mainstay of American Middle East policy. While Trump prioritizes a deal with Iran and economic partnerships with Gulf states, Netanyahu is left with limited American support on Gaza, while his influence on the broader regional dynamics is fading.

11:12 Israel says 107 trucks of humanitarian aid entered Gaza yesterday

"One hundred and seven trucks, owned by the UN and the international community, transported humanitarian aid - including flour, baby food and medical supplies - and passed through the Kerem Shalom crossing into the Gaza Strip yesterday (Thursday, May 22)," said a statement from Tsogat, an agency under the Israeli Defense Ministry, published on the X network.

The trucks are to be unloaded immediately, after which their cargo will be transferred to other vehicles, which will then deliver it to the United Nations warehouse.

According to the same source, 100 UN aid trucks entered the enclave on Wednesday; 93 the day before, and about ten on Monday - after more than two and a half months of a complete blockade of the devastated Palestinian territory.

10:44 At least 16 killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza

Israeli airstrikes on several areas of the Gaza Strip have killed 16 people, the Palestinian territory's Civil Defense said today.

As Mohammed al-Mugair, who heads the Gaza Civil Defense, told AFP, the areas affected include parts of the center and south of the enclave, and "dozens of wounded" have been recorded.

The Israeli armed forces said that in the past 24 hours they had "eliminated several terrorists" and carried out strikes on "military complexes, weapons depots and sniper positions". The same statement said that the Israeli air force had hit more than 75 targets it designated as terrorist throughout the Gaza Strip.

At the same time, the World Health Organization warned that two million Palestinians across Gaza were starving, while at least 29 people, including children, had died as a result of malnutrition and hunger.

Nasser Hospital, the largest health facility in Khan Yunis, said its capacity was full with children suffering from severe malnutrition.
