Russia fired hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles into Ukraine this morning, hitting numerous civilian targets in Kiev, including a large apartment building, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens, Ukrainian officials said.

Events related to the war in Ukraine, marked by the day

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kiev had suffered one of the most severe Russian attacks, after a nighttime bombing that killed at least 14 people. As he said, these "tragic" actions once again show how much Ukraine needs a stronger and more decisive allied response.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, during the attacks between yesterday and today, Russian forces fired a total of 472 missiles: 440 drones, 2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, 29 cruise missiles and one anti-radar missile.

Two people were also killed in attacks on Nikopol in the east and Odessa in the south of the country, on the Black Sea coast.

US President Donald Trump left the G7 summit early and avoided meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, although the Ukrainian president had previously announced that he wanted to talk to him about purchasing military equipment from the US.

The European Commission has presented a plan to ban Russian gas imports into the European Union by the end of 2027. The bill is being considered by member states and the European Parliament.

According to Reuters, the Trump administration has suspended the work of an interdepartmental working group that was tasked with developing a strategy to pressure Russia to encourage peace talks on Ukraine.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new military aid to Ukraine worth two billion Canadian dollars (about 1.27 billion euros) during a meeting with Zelensky at the G7 summit.

The UK has imposed sanctions on 20 ships suspected of being part of the so-called "ghost fleet" by which Russia exports its oil, as well as on ten individuals and legal entities linked to the energy sector.

The Ukrainian General Staff said that 78 armed clashes were recorded on Tuesday, mainly in the Pokrovskoye region in the east of the country.

Merz expects new US sanctions against Russia

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was "cautiously optimistic (...) that in the coming days the United States will make decisions on additional sanctions against Russia", which is waging war against Ukraine.

"We all agree that we must do everything to put an end to this war as soon as possible," the German leader added in a brief statement to reporters at the end of the G7 summit in Canada.

Macron: Attack on Kiev shows Putin's complete cynicism

"Last night was truly terrible for Ukraine," French President Emmanuel Macron said during the G7 summit, hours after Russia's attacks on Kiev that killed 14 people.

According to him, the attack "shows the complete cynicism of President Putin, who is using the international context to intensify attacks - again on civilians - and acting contrary to the statements he has made in previous months."

Macron added that the "common position" of the G7 members is that sanctions should be "reinforced." As he pointed out, coordination of actions by different actors "could change the course of things," because it "could lead to Russia returning to the negotiating table."

US condemns Russian attack on Kiev: US citizen killed

The United States condemned today's Russian attack on Kiev, in which fourteen people were killed, including an American citizen.

"We strongly condemn these attacks and express our deepest condolences to the families and all those affected," said State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, confirming the death of the American citizen.
