Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich symbolically reopened the cathedral, built in the 12th century and badly damaged in the 2019 fire, by knocking three times on the large wooden doors of Notre Dame, announcing the start of a two-hour ceremony attended by hundreds of dignitaries from around the world.
Carrying a staff, cut from one of the roof beams that survived the inferno of the fire, Ulrich, as reported by France 24, ordered the cathedral to “open its doors” before joining hundreds of guests, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Among the dignitaries were US President Donald Trump, the wife of the current US President Jill Biden, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Britain’s Prince William and dozens of others.
Around 50 heads of state and government are expected in the French capital to attend a ceremony marking the restoration of the Gothic masterpiece, five years after a fire in 2019 devastated the world heritage site and toppled its tower, France 24 announced ahead of the ceremony.
Notre Dan Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture from the 12th century, was engulfed in fire on April 15, 2019 at around 7 p.m. and spread from the attic. Extinguishing the fire lasted about 15 hours, the roof and the tower on the roof burned, and the interior, upper walls and windows were badly damaged.
