A Japanese woman believed to be the world's oldest person has died at the age of 116, Japanese public broadcaster NHK announced on Saturday.

Tomiko Itsuka died of old age at a nursing home on December 29, NHK reported, citing the Ashiya City Council in southern Hyogo Prefecture.

Tomiko Itsuka was born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, the eldest of three siblings, and moved to Ashiya about 30 years ago, according to NHK.

Itsuka was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest living person.

"In her long life, she gave us a lot of courage and hope. We thank her once again and express our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones," said Ashiya Mayor Ryosuke Takashima.

Japan's population is aging rapidly. Japan has had a record number of more than 95,100 people aged 100 or older since September last year. The number of centenarians has been increasing for the 54th consecutive year.
