Đukanović: Montenegro continues in spite of the flags that attacked it, because it has good foundations that were woven by Vidoj Žarković's generation

AUTHOR: M.J.-POBJEDA
Former President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović said that Vidoj Žarković's generation left a deep, strong and lasting mark on the development of Montenegro. Đukanović believes that this was the foundation on which it was possible to further develop Montenegro, regardless of the fact that, as he said, we are in the vortex of right-wing attacks and cheap populism that has engulfed Montenegro.
- Regardless of the fact that we are resigned to such a development of events, we suggest a little optimism - let's say - Montenegro continues despite all those signs that were against it, it continues, because it has good foundations that were built during that period of activity of Vidoj Žarković - said Đukanović at the international gathering dedicated to the image and work of Vidoj Žarković.
Milan Kučan, the first president of Slovenia, said that at first Žarković did not believe that Slovenia would go the path of independence. Nevertheless, Kučan believes that this could have been avoided, that the country of that time, Yugoslavia, could have responded to the challenges of that time.
- Then they told me from the USA that they will never recognize us, but I told them - what you are asking me to do, to annul the decisions of the referendum, I, as a democratic man, cannot do, but you will admit the facts that you do not see now and you will admit everything states that will be created - recalled Kučan.
Đukanović, believes that the political generation of Žarković is one of the most successful political generations in the history of Montenegro.
- There were also some advantages, some of those people came out already with the authority of the 13th of July insurgent, with a high military rank, he was not alone, let's remember others, and the other advantage was that it was a time of stability, dedicated to progress, prosperity , the time of the unquestioned authority of the government. Those 45 years are the time of fascinating creation of Montenegro in every respect - stated Đukanović. He said that the political earthquake that followed, nullified everything that generation had created.
Đukanović believes that Vidok Žarković's generation left a deep, lasting mark on the development of Montenegro.
- I think it is unfair, in the period of recent history when the merits of some previous governments were overemphasized, where only those periods were talked about, and not about the periods of socialist construction, not to mention this newly composed political history, and where in 100 days the government it talks about historical achievements. I just say "greote" to that - pointed out Đukanović.
Speaking about the government today, he says that failures are an integral part of life. He believes that a combination of several circumstances led to the change of government in 2020.
- But let's leave it as an incident that will pass. Montenegro has good anti-fascist, civic foundations, it shows resilience to resist the frenzied grand nationalism and superficiality of Western politics generated by the monopoly of one superpower after the Cold War. Montenegro survives in that vortex and will find the strength to get out of that vortex and continue on the good path that was laid out after the Second World War - Đukanović concluded.
Speaking about the breakup of Yugoslavia, Kučan said that "Serbs believed that Yugoslavia was created by their will."
- And we were of the attitude - no one received us, but we entered voluntarily. no one can set conditions for how we will get out - said Kučan.
Kučan also said that the state was not given by God, but that it is the way it was made and it should be preserved.
-If not, then it will happen that its sovereignty is threatened from the outside, but it is rare that the sovereignty, which was won by generations, is threatened from the inside. That is the situation in Montenegro now - said Kučan.
Đukanović, speaking about the support his policy received from Žarković, said that it was not verbal and empty, but, as he said, was essential and concrete.
- I felt it, not only in our meetings, but also on other occasions - says the former president.
Đukanović points out that it would have been more difficult to achieve independence in 2006 if there had not been authorities and people from all times and governments who, as he states, knew the eternal danger of Greater Serbian nationalism and who, he adds, selflessly committed themselves to the need to restore Montenegrin independence, as the only guarantor of our identity and prosperity.
Kučan says that he knew that after the breakup of Yugoslavia, he knew that the union of Serbia and Montenegro would not last long.
- I didn't know how long it would last, but I knew it wouldn't last. It was clear to me that sooner or later Montenegro will raise the question of its own statehood - says Kučan. He said that the efforts from Belgrade should be said: We are a sovereign state.
