Damir Šehović, the president of the Social Democrats (SD), at the convention in support of Milo Đukanović's candidacy for president in Bijelo Polje, described the upcoming elections as a historical stumbling block.
It is an event that will determine the character and future of this country. That's why all of us, regardless of national, religious, political, or any other affiliation, who have embedded ourselves in the foundations of this country, have no right to stay home on March 19, just like two weeks after that. I believe that a majority, decent, civil and European Montenegro will be on the right side of history this time, just like in 2006," said Damir Šehović at the final convention that was held last night at the Sports Center "Nikoljac" in Bijelo Polje. .
When we live in a time of unraveling, and this, Šehović added, is a time of not a political but a civilizational unraveling in Montenegro, then we do not have the luxury of standing on the sidelines and observing political processes from the gallery.
Before us is an easy choice, but not an easy task at all. Neither SD nor DPS, nor any other party or individual will bring victory. Not even Milo Đukanović himself. It will only happen if we all do as much as we can. That is, as much as we have to, if we want to be worthy of the challenges that society faces and responsible towards the generations to come - emphasized Šehović.
We have no right, according to the SD leader, to be angry with someone or something, even if we have a valid reason for it.
All of us, as many as there are, must roll up our sleeves and not allow the so-called penitent conciliators, honorable saviors and economic revivalists, read vassals of other countries, read yesterday's arsonists who present themselves to us today as firefighters, to steal the future of Montenegro, to finish and finish what they did not achieve in the previous two and a half years. That's why the stakes are high. It is the biggest since the referendum here. And it's not personal either. Neither party. Rather than state. Historically - stressed Šehović.
Precisely because we know that history will judge the actions we do today, Šehović continued, the SD did not have the slightest dilemma.
He didn't calculate. He did not divine. He didn't bargain. He didn't blackmail. Rather, he made the only rational and state-responsible decision without hesitation, to clearly and loudly support Mr. Đukanović as the only opposition candidate, a candidate of decent and state-responsible Montenegro, who can realistically win these elections. And that again, and it wouldn't be the first time, with our help, he would turn the wheel of history in this country. To return Montenegro to itself, to its civic, anti-fascist and European orientation. So that we finally stop being ashamed of other people's shame, the shame of those who have been openly anti-Montenegro policy since 2020 - said Šehović.
Šehović further emphasized that Montenegro needs a new consensus and compromise, but for and in the interest of Montenegro, not against Montenegro.
That. Montenegro needs a gathering. But not in national folds, but around civil and secular values, around values that strengthen and not those that undermine its statehood. That. Montenegro needs reconciliation. But real and not fake reconciliation, which puts a sign of equality between anti-fascism and fascism, patriotism and primitivism, secularism and clericalism, science and dogma, executioner and victim. That. Montenegro needs to change. But not that it collapses. We need changes for the better, not for the worse. Changes that ensure prosperity, not those that lead us into chaos. That. Perhaps we also need to dismantle the deviations that were present in the previous system of government. But certainly not the dismantling of the state and its fundamental values - concluded Šehović.
