Adoption of Amendments to the Law on President A Direct Threat to Longtime European ambitions of Montenegro

After the deputies and in the Montenegrin Assembly adopted a new law limiting the authority of the President of Montenegro and after failing to appoint new judges of the Constitutional Court, Kopredsed the Parliamentary Committee on Stabilization and Association for Montenegro Vladimir Bilčik and the Permanent Reporter of the European Parliament for Black Gora Tonino Picula, a joint statement, expressed disappointment for disrespecting the opinion of the Venice Commission.

We convey their statement integrally:

"We have been informed of the results of the voting in the Montenegro Assembly. This way we express our deep disappointment with an unsuccessful attempt to appoint a judge of the Constitutional Court and the adoption of the Law on the Act on the President of Montenegro. Montenegro, published on December 9, was not taken into account during the vote.

The adoption of changes by 41 Prophets of the ruling majority is a direct threat to long -term European ambitions of Montenegro, including respect for the principles of constitutionality and rule of law. The results of the vote are threatening the process of accessing Montenegro to the European Union and could push Montenegro into a long political crisis and constitutional chaos.

We hereby appeal to all political donors in the country to rise above their divisions and immediately re -establish the functionality of democratic institutions in accordance with the constitutional principles. We invite political leaders to fulfill the expectations of most citizens of Montenegro who support the European future of the country, by working on dedication to EU membership and accelerate the reforms needed to integrate in the EU.

Unfortunately, no negotiating chapter has been closed in the last five years. The development of the political situation in Montenegro has questioned the position of the country as the leader of the EU processing process in the last few months.

That is why we hereby invite the rapid political agreement that will end the mandate of this Government without any delay and open the way for the new elections for the Montenegrin Assembly, " - said in a joint statement by Vladimir Bilčik and Tonina Picule.
