Police Directorate Director Zoran Brđanin will resign after accepting the executive branch's offer to take on an advisory position at the National Security Agency, "Vijesti" has learned.
As agreed, Brđanin will be replaced by the current acting head of the Crime Prevention Sector, Lazar Šćepanović, who will lead the public service in an acting mandate.
Brđanin's resignation marks the end of a turbulent era at the head of the police, which has been marked by several interruptions of mandates since February 2021, and then returns to the head of the police after meritorious court decisions.
Brđanin's resignation is expected tomorrow, after which the way will be opened for Interior Minister Danilo Šaranović to immediately submit a proposal to the Government to appoint Lazar Šćepanović as acting chief.
According to Article 16 of the Law on Internal Affairs, in the event of the termination of the mandate of the Director of the Police, the appointed acting director may hold that position for a maximum of six months.
The offer to Brđanin for a transfer to the ANB in exchange for submitting his resignation was presented on Friday evening, to which the current director verbally agreed.
He was offered the position of advisor to the acting director of the National Security Agency - a position that was mentioned as a possible option as early as this summer, however, there were certain obstacles, which is why such an agreement was not realized.
The new acting police chief Lazar Šćepanović was proposed by Minister Šaranović in March of this year, after a public call by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to take over the police, but due to disagreements in the executive branch, this attempt failed, and the assistant director of the Financial Intelligence Sector, Aleksandar Radović, was appointed to the acting position, contrary to the Law on Internal Affairs.
Now, the Europe Now Movement-Democrats have reached an agreement to make a change in the secret and public services, so that this time there will be no friction over who will be in the ANB and who in the Police Administration.
The wave of changes in the security sector began on Thursday evening when the director of the National Security Agency, Boris Milić, resigned after talks with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, and the government, in the dead of night, appointed entrepreneur Ivica Janović to the acting position.
