Citizen support for EU membership reached a record level of 79.3 percent

The support of the citizens of Montenegro for the country's membership in the European Union reached a record high level of 79.3 percent, according to a survey conducted by the De Facto agency for the needs of the Delegation of the European Union in Montenegro during May.
According to the European House in Montenegro, this is an increase in support for membership of 1.5 percentage points compared to the results of a survey conducted in November last year.
We are glad that the support of the citizens of Montenegro for the country's membership in the EU is at such a high level. With such a strong pro-European stance, the citizens of Montenegro are sending a clear and strong message that they want the future of their country in the European Union. Political actors should find a way to cooperate, in the public interest and above party positions, in order to implement key reforms and enable this long-standing wish of the vast majority of Montenegrin citizens to become a reality - said EU Ambassador to Montenegro Oana Kristina Popa.
The survey, which was conducted on a sample of 1,200 respondents in the period from May 9 to 23, showed that more than half of Montenegrin citizens perceive the European Union as the largest donor in the country.
75.9 percent of Montenegrin citizens believe that Montenegro will be a member of the EU, and the number of those who would vote in the referendum that would be organized on that occasion is also increasing.
Over 90 percent of citizens would vote for the referendum, and 81.1 percent of those who voted would support Montenegro's membership in the EU.
A significant number of citizens, 48.1 percent, however, believe that the country is moving slowly or not moving fast enough towards membership.
However, it seems that the optimism of Montenegrin citizens regarding the country's direction is growing. Thus, 67.4 percent of citizens believe that the country is moving in the right direction, which is 20 percentage points more compared to the survey conducted in November last year. Citizens recognize the economic situation, corruption and unemployment as the biggest social problems.
