Do Kwon and Chan Yun four months in prison for falsified passports

"Crypto-currency king" Do Kwon and his associate Chan Jun were sentenced to four months in prison each in the Podgorica High Court today because on March 23 they tried to fly from the Podgorica airport to Dubai with fake Costa Rican passports.
Judge Ivana Becić pronounced the verdict.
South Korean citizens Kwon Do and Chan Yun Han are guilty because on March 23 at 8:59 a.m. from the airport in Podgorica, which is also a border crossing, they were aware of their act, even though they knew it was prohibited, and at the VIP passage for a flight to Dubai documents as correct - said judge Becić, adding that in this way they committed the criminal offense of document forgery.
She clarified that the period they spent in custody will be included in the prison sentence imposed on the accused.
The court ordered the first measure, which ordered the confiscation of the false passports of Costa Rica and the false passports of Belgium, which the police found during the search of their luggage, from the defendants.
Explaining the verdict, Judge Becić said that the court established from the evidence presented, especially from the letter from the Police Department of the Department for International Cooperation, Interpol and Serena, that the documents that the defendants had in their possession were not issued by the competent authorities of Costa Rica.
It was also established that the accused Korean citizens are not in the records of Costa Rican citizens
We remind you that last week in the Basic Court, the Koreans gave up on the previously requested verification of the authenticity of the Costa Rican passports with which they tried to leave Montenegro on March 23, stating that they believe the Interpol documents that they are fake documents.
They then clarified that they had traveled around the world with the passports of Costa Rica and Belgium, which they received through an agency in Singapore, and that for this reason they had no doubts about their credibility.
Their lawyer, Goran Rodić, explained that the accused Koreans gave up the proposal to ask the Costa Rican authorities for information on whether the passports of this country in their possession are authentic after the newly established defense showed them an Interpol document stating that the documents were fake.
Kwon Do then explained that he believed in the authenticity of the passports of Costa Rica and Belgium because they were obtained through an agency from Singapore recommended by a friend whom he respects, and that during the procedure their request was rejected.
He pointed out that a person like him would never go to countries that are far from his home country with a fake passport.
It is illogical for me, as a person who is famous in the world, to travel with a fake passport in my name - it is tantamount to suicide - explained Do Kwon.
He asked the court that if he decides to accept the accusations of the prosecution, the sentence for falsification of documents should be applied only to him and spare his associate Chang Jun Han.
He did not know the exact name of the agency from Singapore, stating that it was a name in Chinese.
Kwan Do also said that a few days after receiving the Belgian passports, he and his associate saw that the names and dates of birth in the passports were wrong and that they did not use them for that reason.
We did not suspect that such a mistake could occur, so we did not check the passports during the handover. At the moment when we applied for a Belgian passport, we also applied for a Granada passport, which was rejected, as well as a Costa Rican passport, which was accepted, as a result of which we built a relationship of trust with this agency - said Do Kwon.
Chang Yun Han confirmed Do Kwon's allegations regarding the passport applications that turned out to be fake.
In his closing remarks, prosecutor Haris Šabotić said that the allegations of the indictment were proven during the proceedings and asked the judge to declare Do Kwon and Honda Chan Jun guilty.
He also said that their changed statements are unfounded, stating that it is illogical that the defendants did not pay attention to the data when taking over the documents.
He also said that the fact that forged passports were found in their hand luggage indicates that they were ready to use them.
Lawyer Rodić pointed out that during the hearing with the prosecutor - twice, but in the courtroom - they insisted on checking the legality of the passports, which shows that they really believed in the authenticity of the documents.
He also said that it is not a rare case that rich people are the target of various hunters and frauds, he said that it is possible that they were deceived when applying for economic citizenship.
In a certain way, it can be said that they invested 800,000 euros in the Montenegrin judiciary when it was proposed that they defend themselves on bail. I think it cost them more than passports in Singapore, because it was clear that they could neither see nor feel freedom - said Rodić.
Do Kwon was arrested on March 23 in Montenegro, when he tried to board a flight to Dubai with forged documents, and is wanted by several international security services.
At the request of South Korea, the higher court in Podgorica sentenced Do Kwon and Chang Jun Han to extradition custody for up to six months.
