DPS: The tragedy in Cetinje is a consequence of the catastrophic reaction of the security sector, this is no longer a political issue

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The tragedy that occurred in Cetinje, in which 12 innocent people died as a result of the catastrophic reaction of the security sector, is an alarm for the entire Montenegrin society, especially considering that a similar crime occurred only two years ago, and that the police did nothing this time either, except count the victims of the murderer Martinović, the DPS announced.

"Unfortunately, what we have been saying for years is being confirmed - the party's plunder of the security sector has led to the fact that in four years we have changed four directors of the National Security Agency, four directors of the Police Administration and three ministers of the interior, which has completely broken the security system of Montenegro. The early retirement of a huge number of police officers, in an effort to create a "party police", has meant that today, according to the systematization, the state is short of 1,500 police officers," the DPS points out.

As they further state, the obligation of the state, or rather the officials who coordinate the security sector on its behalf, is to organize the security forces in such a way that, in accordance with professional standards, the repetition of the same patterns of violence is prevented.

"Due to the lack of a systematic approach and the catastrophic assessment of the authorities, Cetinje was secured by only nine police officers on the critical day, despite the Prime Minister's statement that 120 members of the OKG reside in the city, and despite the fact that over the past year the capital has been the scene of a showdown between warring clans, which led to explosions in broad daylight, sniper killings, the use of mortars, murders in Meterizma, as well as the loss of life of two people at a roundabout in Podgorica," the DPS emphasizes.

As they believe, the decision to leave Cetinje with a single-digit number of police officers on January 1 allowed the killer to kill unhindered in as many as five locations and to terrorize the Montenegrin capital for hours.

"What makes this decision even more reckless is the fact that nothing was learned from the almost identical crime that occurred in Cetinje two years ago. All of this, as well as the fact that it is the New Year holidays and that Cetinje is among the most visited cities, was not enough for the authorities to increase the police presence. How that assessment ended - unfortunately, we had the opportunity to see.

Because of all of the above, it is clear that responsibility is necessary, from the top to the bottom of the system, because innocent lives were lost due to wrong decisions and wrong actions. And this is not a matter of politics and political upheaval - it is a matter of protecting the state and citizens, as well as the necessary restoration of trust in the security system," the DPS said.

Finally, as they conclude, the Democratic Party of Socialists will continue to deal with this topic in a responsible manner, not in a political manner, and, as they state, inform the public that they will not respond to "pathological statements from a party that continues to pour salt on Cetinje's wounds, choosing seats instead of saving face."
