EP on Montenegro: They regret the unclosed chapter, are concerned about boycotts and blockades, and mention RTCG

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The European Parliament expressed concern about political boycotts and blockades in Montenegro, expressed regret that the negotiation chapter 31 was not closed at the end of last year, supported the holding of local elections on the same day, and called on Podgorica to ensure the independence of the public service.

This, among other things, is stated in the draft report on our country, presented by the rapporteur for our country, Marjan Šarec.

It was noted that it is commendable that two negotiation chapters have been closed, and called on all political actors to remain focused on the issue of European integration.

It was regretted that Chapter 31 was not closed.

"We call on all parties to find solutions to open issues," the document emphasized, adding that in this regard, disputes that lead to blocking the accession process should be avoided.

Malign influences still a problem, deeply concerned about third-party influence

The draft also states that they remain seriously concerned about malign influences from outside, attempts at destabilization and hybrid threats.

"Deep concern also remains about... disinformation campaigns by third countries. We appeal to Montenegro to adopt countermeasures in cooperation with the EU and NATO," the draft states, among other things.

On the other hand, it is emphasized that there are political boycotts and blockades, as well as new tensions and ethnic polarization.

They recommend elections in one day, appeal to the authorities to ensure the independence of the public service

They also called on Montenegro to adapt its electoral legislation to EU standards, calling on the authorities to hold local elections on the same day.

Our authorities were also called upon to fully harmonize visa policy with EU practice, especially when it comes to countries that pose a security risk.

They are also concerned about media polarization, and again, there was talk of RTCG.

"We call on the Montenegrin authorities to ensure the editorial, institutional and financial independence of the public service," the draft report says.

It also states that Montenegrin media are vulnerable to political and foreign influence.

They also recalled the importance of good neighborly relations.

"Good neighborly relations and regional cooperation are the essence of the enlargement process," the document says.

It also expressed regret that the most vulnerable groups in Montenegro continue to face discrimination.
