Goana: There are structures in Montenegro that want to stop its path to the EU

Deputy Secretary General of NATO Mircea Đoana said that there are structures in Montenegro that want to move the country away from the path to the EU. Đoana said this in a debate with members of the Defense and Security Committee of the European Parliament.
"I met with the new president and prime minister of Montenegro, they are impressive, but it is true that there are differences, not only in public opinion regarding the war in Ukraine, but there are ethnic, ideological, religious structures that are there, as well as internal , regional and foreign forces who have the idea to stop Montenegro on the Euro-Atlantic road. As was the case with NATO membership, now the plan is to stop it or at least discourage it on the European path," Goana pointed out.
He emphasized that Montenegro needs to be provided with additional support in cyberspace and welcomed the efforts of NATO allies and EU countries that are helping the country bilaterally.
"I think that Montenegro, like the other countries of the Western Balkans, needs our help, because there is a very strong campaign there to stop them on their way to the EU, with agents (proxies) inside and forces outside the country who are doing it in a deliberate way," he said. .
Goana also assessed that the level of instability in the Western Balkans is not dangerous, but also warned that "you never know how a spark can cause a fire."
"Russia could be interested in creating problems for us in that area as well," pointed out Goana.
