Milatović: The replacement of the City RTV Council is the task of the new city administration; Bilčik: It is unacceptable when politicians threaten journalists

Since the last local elections, on October 23, the winning coalition, and especially the candidate for the mayor of Podgorica, one of the leaders of the Europe now movement, Jakov Milatović, uses almost every media appearance to threaten the dismissal of the management and members of the City Television Council, openly announcing revanchism.
I am absolutely not satisfied with the editorial staff and editorial policy at City Television, and it is certain that one of the things that we will do as a new city administration is to change the Council of City RTV, which will then have to carry out a kind of revision of what has been done so far either to more objectively lay the foundations for the future - said Milatović.
In order to solve this problem in Montenegro, it is necessary to have a credible judiciary and the right people in leadership positions, said the British ambassador to Montenegro, Karen Madox.
If the situation you described to me, i.e. if you are afraid of losing your job for political reasons, happened in the UK, you could sue the employer. You would have a fair trial and the decision would be based on the facts. I can't judge the situation you just described, because I don't have all the information. So, you need a judge who can listen to all the information and make a decision - said Madox.
The media should serve as a platform that is part of a free and fair fight between political opponents, and this also applies to private and public broadcasters, said European MP Vladimir Bilčik. He points out that, due to the recent murder of two journalists in his country, he is particularly sensitive to this topic and warns that journalists should never be intimidated or attacked.
I think it is unacceptable when politicians threaten journalists and the media. You should be able to do your job and ask difficult questions, both to me and to any politician in Montenegro. And I hope that you will continue to work freely and independently - said the European representative.
Every advanced democracy needs strong, functional, independent, quality and free media, and politicians must respect their role in society, Bilčik concluded.
