Popa: Montenegro to complete reforms on hold, and then to close chapters that are already ready

The EU Ambassador in Montenegro, Owan Kristina Popa said that Montenegro must complete several pending reforms, after which it will continue to close chapters from which they are already ready to be closed.

At the session of the Committee on European Integration, the message that the President of the Euro-Team Ursula Fon Der Lajen was transferred was very clear - Montenegro must now be fully focused on EU accession.

Montenegro must focus, there is a consensus that expanding is a strategic goal and that one time will be a priority. In that sense, the perspective of Montenegro is important. We are all looking forward to an intergovernmental conference in late January. When the state ends must complete several pending reforms and continue to close chapters, many of which are ready. That is why it is important that the Assembly and Government focus on the results. This requires the structural approach and construction of consensus between the ruling majority and the opposition. The end of 2023 showed that possible, Popa said.

He adds that after important appointments, the Montenegro should be provided with the functionality of the system.

We hope to deal with things within the system, and then finish reforms for temporary benchmarks, hopefully until June, Popa said.

He adds that the new European Commission will be appointed by the end of the year and that the EU is waiting for the elections, and in Montenegro it is that "shows where he stands."

We believe that the next EC report will have a more positive tone because the end of 2023 showed significant progress, it stated Pop.

She said it was important that in Montenegro, everyone understands that any change in legislation requires that European partners explain why it seems.

Comprehensive communication with EC needs to be easier for us to understand a certain interest in Montenegro. It happened that we learn from the media for such things, or not to find out at all. However, the end of the year has brought better communication between the EC and Montenegrin institutions. The question, more sensitive than the others, are certainly constitutional changes. Initiate constitutional reforms is something that is not required from the candidate state to do overnight, but is already required to do so when it will access the EU, because it is very linked to the end of the negotiation, Popa said.

Croatia and Montenegro to resolve bilateral issues through dialogue

Speaking about the dispute of Montenegro and Croatia regarding the ship "Jadran", Popa said it was very important that bilateral issues such as that remain on a bilateral level and not introduced to European integration issues.

The MP of BS Amer Smailović said that there was a dispute of two defense ministers and Croatia regarding the ship "Jadran", so it is important to hear the attitude of the EU Delegation to be reflected in the European integration process. He said that the EU should pay special attention to the status of minorities.

Popa said that the ability of the state candidate is reflected in being able to solve bilateral issues.

So we believe Croatia and Montenegro can solve this through dialogue, Popa said.
