AUTHOR: M.J.
We hope that the positive trend we see in Podgorica will continue, European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Varheli said at a press conference in Brussels.
When asked when the EC will be able to recommend to the EU Council that a draft of the accession agreement for Montenegro be drawn up, he answered that when all the chapters are closed, then the next step is in order, that is, a proposal to draw up a draft.
"But there are still steps that need to be taken. We hope that the positive trend we see in Podgorica will continue and that it will then be possible to recommend it as soon as possible," said Varheli.
An expansion can be expected by the end of the mandate of the next commission, Varhelji said.
"In June, we had an intergovernmental conference with Montenegro, we started closing the chapter and thus opened the way to the conclusion of accession negotiations," said Varheli.
The Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borel, said that the EU has faced numerous challenges in recent years, stating that the war in Ukraine has shown that Russia poses a serious threat to the security of Europe.
Borel emphasized that the report relies on individual states and their progress, as well as that it is based on the rule of law.
He emphasized that, in the last five years, enlargement has returned to the top of the EC's agenda, reminding that the EU has nine candidates and one potential candidate.
"Reforms implemented by countries testify that the EU is like a magnet. The EU attracts both people and countries," said Borelj.
He emphasized that citizens feel the benefits of that process already in the process of European integration, pointing to the instruments that the EU has for countries that are in negotiations.
Borel pointed out the importance of a common foreign and security policy, stating that the goal is to protect the region, but also preserve the global order.
"Our goal is not only to be bigger, but also to be stronger. We want to include our neighbors and be stronger together," Borel said.
He said that individual partner states, through compliance with the Union's foreign and security policy, give an important sign that they share values with the EU.
According to him, North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo are voluntarily complying with the EU's foreign and security policy.
