He Doesn't Speak Montenegrin, but He Sings It – Irish Musician Covers Nina Žižić’s Eurovision Song

Author: M.J. Gdnus

Irish singer, multi-instrumentalist, and ethnomusicologist Peadar Connolly-Davey has recently recorded a cover of the song "Dobrodošli" ("Welcome"), which will represent Montenegro at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel, performed by Nina Žižić.

His version brings a fresh and innovative musical take on Montenegro’s entry.

In his rendition, Peadar created a new instrumental arrangement in a different key, incorporating elements of autoharp, flute, Irish whistles, and the Chinese bawu flute. This arrangement adds a new dimension to the song while staying true to its original spirit.

When asked by RTCG whether it was difficult to sing in Montenegrin, Peadar said:

“I have a deep respect for the music and culture of Montenegro. This project means a lot to me because I had never sung in Montenegrin before and I don’t speak the language. However, I’ve listened to a lot of music from the Balkans over the years, so I was somewhat familiar with some of the sounds. Nina’s interpretation is so strong and powerful that it was a challenge for me—not just linguistically, but vocally as well. It was a big challenge—but I truly enjoyed it, and I hope you’ll like it. Best of luck to Montenegro at Eurovision this year!”

Nina Žižić expressed her delight with the cover of the song she will perform at Eurovision in less than two months:

“Slavic languages are very hard to pronounce, and it’s a privilege for me that someone who’s not familiar with these languages took the time to sing my song so beautifully and melodically. Plus, I really like how Peadar sings,” Žižić said.

Peadar shared his version of "Dobrodošli" on YouTube, blending Celtic and Balkan musical elements in a unique and captivating way.

As we eagerly and proudly await Nina Žižić’s performance in Basel on May 15, during the second semifinal of Eurovision, performing second in the lineup, make sure to check out the official acoustic version of "Dobrodošli."
