Around 1,200 protests have been announced for today in the US and other parts of the world, and organizers expect it to be the largest protest in a single day against President Donald Trump and his advisor Elon Musk, who have steered the new administration in a conservative direction with a series of moves.
The protest, called "Hands Off," will give opponents of the new government a chance to express their dissatisfaction with the reshaping of US domestic and foreign policy, said Ezra Levin, one of the founders of the group Indivisible, one of the organizers of the demonstrations.
Events are planned in all 50 US states as well as Canada, the UK, Germany, Portugal and Mexico. One of the largest protests is expected in Washington.
Around 150 activist groups are expected to participate
Around 150 activist groups are expected to participate in the protests, including the SEIU union with around two million members in the US and Canada, the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ rights activist group, Greenpeace and various pro-Palestinian groups.
The SEIU union is known for its strong support for Democratic candidates, and it donated $28 million to Barack Obama's campaign in 2008.
