Here's how much snow we're expecting in the Houston area and when

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Confidence is growing in winter weather in Houston. Travel will be difficult, if not impossible. He likelihood of accumulating snow for Southeast Texas has increased over the last few days. Various computer models are coming into better agreement regarding this possibility. Based on this latest information, the KHOU 11 weather team has put together a first call official forecast for this storm.

Areas that will likely see the least amount of snow will be located along the immediate coastline. Snow totals here may get cut down due to mixing issues with sleet and rain. Additionally, temperatures near or just above freezing will compress any snow that does fall, leading to smaller totals.

Along I-10 and across the city of Houston, a general 2 to 3 inches are possible, with some higher amounts likely north of the interstate and lower amounts likely to the south.

As you head farther north – Montgomery County, Polk County, Walker County and San Jacinto County -- you could be looking at two to four inches, with the highest totals north and east towards Jasper.

Please note – this snowfall total is still subject to change, based on the storm’s evolution.

As for the timing, winter weather will begin sometime Monday evening. The peak impact for snow will be Monday night through Tuesday morning with it tapering off by Tuesday afternoon.

While snow and sleet are likely across the area, we do have the possibility of ice, as well. According to meteorologist Pat Cavlin, ice accumulations should stay below the threshold of causing widespread power outages but could be enough to leave a glaze on roadways and tree branches.

Travel impacts

Travel impacts are expected to be profound from this storm. Roadways will become treacherous and snow- covered, and hundreds, if not thousands, of flights will be canceled. When this winter storm comes, you want to be where you’re going to be by Monday night. These impacts will be felt through midweek.
