"Trump administration to begin mass arrests of illegal immigrants starting Tuesday"

The administration of Donald Trump, who will take office as US president on Monday, January 20, will carry out mass arrests of illegal immigrants across the country starting Tuesday, said Tom Homan, the official who will be in charge of the border.

"There will be operations across the country. Chicago is just one place among many," said Homan, the former director of the agency responsible for border control and immigration (ICE), responding to reports in the US media.

This would be one of President Trump's first actions after his inauguration on Monday, January 20.

Trump promised during the campaign to deport millions of undocumented migrants, which would be the largest operation to expel illegal immigrants in the history of the United States.

"On Tuesday, ICE will go out and finally do its job. We will allow them to arrest foreign criminals. "What we're telling ICE is that they're going to enforce immigration law without apology," added Homan, who the new Republican president has called "the border czar."

"They're going to focus on the worst first, the threats to public safety, but no one is excluded if they're in an irregular situation, if they have a problem," Homan said.

Media reports said the raids were set to begin Tuesday in Chicago, would last "all week," and would involve 100 to 200 ICE agents.

Chicago, which is led by Democrats, is one of several U.S. cities that have declared themselves "sanctuary cities" for migrants.
