Leading US Democrats have slammed Donald Trump's decision to attack Iran, questioning the legality of the military action.
"No president should be allowed to unilaterally push this nation into something as significant as war," said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Republican Trump must be held accountable to Congress and the American people.
"The risk of a broader, more prolonged and more destructive war has now increased dramatically," Schumer said.
Like Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also called for the administration to urgently inform Congress.
"President Trump misled the country about his intentions, failed to seek congressional authorization for the use of military force, and risked American involvement in a potentially catastrophic war in the Middle East," Jeffries said.
“The risk of war has now increased dramatically,” he stressed.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused Trump of acting illegally.
“Tonight, the President ignored the Constitution by unilaterally engaging our military without Congressional authorization,” Pelosi posted on X.
“I join my colleagues in demanding answers from the administration about this operation that endangers American lives and risks further escalation and dangerous destabilization,” she wrote.
From his fellow Republicans, who currently hold the majority in both houses of Congress, Trump has received numerous praise and support for the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.
