The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will announce today that it is laying off 10,000 employees in health agencies, the ministry confirmed to CNN.
Earlier, 10,000 employees voluntarily left, which in total means a reduction of about a quarter of the workforce. The cuts were first reported by The Wall Street Journal, which stated that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. intends to significantly reduce the size of the department he leads, reshaping national health agencies and closing regional departments.
The voluntary departures and layoffs, if fully implemented, would reduce the number of federal workers to 62,000, while five of the ten regional departments would also be closed. Documents reviewed by the WSJ indicate that this will not affect basic health services.
