US President Donald Trump explained to reporters at the White House how negotiations with Russia are progressing.
Asked by the right-wing television channel Newsmax whether Russia is stalling, Trump said: "I'll let you know at a certain point, but I think Russia wants to end this, but it's possible that they're stalling."
"I've known that I've been doing it for years, you know, I don't want to sign a deal, I want to stay in the game, but maybe I don't really want to do it, I'm not sure. But I think Russia would like to end it, and I think Zelensky would like to end it," Trump said.
He added that last week there was a case "where Ukrainian soldiers were surrounded by Russian soldiers."
"That was not good and I think I had a big influence on not everyone getting killed, but they were killed, it's a bloody war," he added.
The US president appears to have been referring to the Russian region of Kursk, which Ukraine attacked last summer but has lost the captured territory in recent weeks.
Trump offered no evidence for his claim that the troops were surrounded, Sky News reports.
