Former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad has spoken out for the first time since he was ousted from power last week.
He said on Monday that he was evacuated to Russia from the Hmeimim airbase in Syria on the evening of December 8 because it was under drone attacks, after leaving Damascus that morning as opposition fighters approached.
The comment was published from Moscow as a statement on the Syrian presidency's Telegram channel and dated December 16.
Assad also said in a statement on his Facebook page that he had planned to continue fighting, but was evacuated by the Russians.
He said that "at no point during the events that took place in Syria" did he consider leaving the country, according to the TASS news agency.
