A senior general of the Russian army and head of the nuclear, biological and chemical defense forces, Igor Kirillov, has been killed in a blast in Moscow.
According to the BBC, General Kirillov was leaving an apartment building when an explosive hidden in a scooter exploded, the Russian Investigative Committee said.
He was accompanied by his assistant, who also died.
Kirillov was in charge of Russia's nuclear defense forces.
He was appointed head of the forces in April 2017.
According to the Russian news agency Tass, he attended the Kostroma Higher Military School of Chemical Defense.
The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) yesterday convicted Kirillov in absentia of using banned chemical weapons in Ukraine, the Kyiv Independent reported.
The SBU claims that under Kirillov, Russia used chemical weapons in Ukraine almost 5,000 times.
Kirillov was sanctioned by Britain and Canada, among others, for his role in the war in Ukraine.
