The Indian government confirmed tonight that its forces have carried out military strikes on a total of nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The official statement said that the operation was called "Sindoor", which hit "terrorist facilities from which attacks on India were planned and conducted".
"Our actions were targeted, measured and non-escalating in nature. No military facilities in Pakistan were targeted. India has shown considerable restraint in the choice of targets and the manner of conducting the operation", said the Indian government.
The attack, it is said, was ordered after last month's deadly attack by militants on tourists in the Indian part of Kashmir. India accuses Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism - a charge that Islamabad completely rejects.
Pakistan said it was a "shameful and cowardly attack" and announced a response.
Recall that earlier tonight, world agencies reported that a Pakistani military spokesman announced that India had carried out missile strikes on three targets inside Pakistani territory, including the old airport in Muzaffarabad, the capital of the Pakistani part of Kashmir.
The attacks occurred in the late evening hours, and Pakistani authorities reacted immediately, calling the action an "unprovoked aggression" and announcing that a response would follow.
The news of the rocket attack was initially published by Reuters, and was later confirmed by Al Jazeera sources. A Pakistani military spokesman said that the attack occurred "a few moments ago" and added: "Pakistan will respond to this unprovoked aggression by India."
Footage also appeared on social networks that allegedly show the moment of the strike. India fired missiles at Pakistan, Islamabad announced a fierce response.
