Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Çolacu has resigned and his Social Democratic Party is leaving the government after a right-wing nationalist candidate won the first round of the presidential election.
Gheorghe Simion, a Eurosceptic who has pledged to put Romania first, won 40.9% of the vote in Sunday’s election and is expected to win the second round on May 18.
He will face Bucharest’s liberal mayor, Nicuşur Dan, who narrowly defeated the Social Democratic (PSD) candidate.
Çolacu told party supporters that since the coalition had failed to meet its goal and “has no credibility after the Romanian vote, I will propose that the PSD leave this coalition.”
His party came to power in a pro-European coalition after the December 1, 2024 election, although the far-right party of George Simion, along with two other groups, attracted a third of the vote.
Simion's victory was largely driven by public frustration over the annulment of the presidential election late last year. His likely victory on May 18 is eagerly awaited in European capitals, as well as in Kiev. He has said he wants an EU of strong, sovereign nations.
Colaku is now expected to hand over his resignation to the interim president, who will then appoint an acting prime minister, the BBC reports.
