Dutch Foreign Minister and All Ministers from His Party Resign – Over Measures Toward Israel

AUTHOR: M.J. GDNUS

The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kaspar Veldkamp, a member of the ruling NSC party, resigned from his position today due to the inability to implement further measures toward Israel. Along with him, all ministers and state secretaries from the same party have left the Dutch government, according to reports from news agencies.

Veldkamp decided to resign because he was unable to take additional measures against Israel, which were blocked by other ministers in the government of Dick Schoof, confirmed Deputy Prime Minister Edi van Hijum to Flemish Radio and Television.

“As a government, we have already taken a series of steps. The Netherlands has nothing to be ashamed of. However, I felt pressure within the cabinet to adopt new measures regarding the situation in Gaza and the West Bank,” Veldkamp stated, according to the Dutch public broadcaster.

Yesterday, during a debate in the Dutch parliament, Veldkamp had promised to take additional measures against Israel. However, other coalition parties rejected that possibility. Resignations were also submitted by Deputy Prime Minister Edi van Hijum, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Health, as well as several state secretaries.

The Dutch government was already in a caretaker (technical) mandate and did not hold a majority in parliament, after Geert Wilders’ PVV party left the coalition earlier this year.

The next parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 29 of this year.
