Israel announces it is cutting off Gaza's electricity supply

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUA

Israel announced today that it is cutting off Gaza's electricity supply, Reuters reported, noting that the "full effects" of the decision were not immediately clear, but that the territory's desalination plants are receiving electricity to produce drinking water.

Today's announcement by the Israeli authorities came seven days after Israel cut off all deliveries of goods to the territory for more than two million people.

With the new measures, Israel is trying to pressure Hamas to accept an extension of the first phase of the ceasefire that ended last weekend.

Israel wants Hamas to release half of the remaining hostages in exchange for a promise to negotiate a permanent ceasefire.

Hamas has been pressing for it to instead begin negotiations on a more difficult second phase of the ceasefire.

The Palestinian militant group said today that it had ended the latest round of ceasefire talks with Egyptian mediators without changing its position, while calling for the immediate start of the second phase of the ceasefire.

A new letter from Israel’s energy minister tells the Israel Electric Corporation to stop selling electricity to Gaza.

The Palestinian enclave has been largely destroyed by war, and generators and solar panels are used to power some of its power.

The ceasefire agreement halted the deadliest and most destructive fighting ever between Israel and Hamas, sparked by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Israel’s retaliation and invasion of the Gaza Strip followed, resulting in more than 40,000 Palestinians killed and tens of thousands displaced from settlements that were destroyed beyond recognition by bombing and rocket attacks.
