No new sanctions will stop Moscow from achieving its goals in Ukraine, said the spokesperson for the Russian government, Maria Zaharova, responding to US President Donald Trump's threats to impose even stricter sanctions on Russia if the Kremlin continues to "tear apart" Ukraine and refuses to come to the negotiating table for peace talks, CNN reported.
"The first sentence of Trump's post is the most important. For many months, the US has focused on Ukraine’s victory. Now, it’s about acknowledging the reality that the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine is bad," Zaharova wrote.
In the first sentence of his post, Trump cited Russia’s ongoing battlefield success as the reason for his threat of banking sanctions on Moscow, claiming that Russia is "absolutely tearing apart Ukraine right now."
"The truth is: Ukraine has lost because it trusted and relied on the previous White House (under the administration of Joseph Biden, who was US President from 2021 to January 2025). When we talk about new sanctions, we are already facing so many sanctions, and they have not stopped us from achieving our goals," Zaharova wrote.
