Israel Bombs Gaza City

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Israeli jets and tanks continued to bomb eastern Gaza City overnight, killing at least 11 people, witnesses and medics said today, as Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya arrived in Cairo for talks on reviving a US-backed ceasefire plan.

The last round of indirect talks in Qatar ended in a stalemate in late July, with Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas accusing each other of failing to make progress on a US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire and a hostage release agreement.

Israel has since announced a new offensive and taken control of Gaza City, which it seized shortly after the war broke out in October 2023, before withdrawing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to extend military control over Gaza, due to be launched in October, has drawn global condemnation for the widespread destruction, displacement and famine affecting 2.2 million people in Gaza.

The plan has also drawn criticism in Israel, with the army chief of staff warning that it could endanger the surviving hostages and pose a death trap for Israeli soldiers. It has also raised fears of further displacement and suffering among the estimated one million Palestinians in the Gaza City region.

The foreign ministers of 24 countries, including Britain, Canada, Australia, France and Japan, said on Monday that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza had reached “unimaginable proportions” and urged Israel to allow unrestricted aid into the enclave.
