Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants a ceasefire agreement to include Ukraine withdrawing from 30 percent of the territory of Donetsk region, which it now controls.
Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine will not withdraw from the territory it controls because it is unconstitutional and would only serve as a springboard for a future Russian invasion.
He said Putin wants the remaining 9,000 square kilometers of Donetsk now under Kiev control, where the heaviest fighting in the war is taking place, as part of a ceasefire deal. He added that Russian officials had conveyed the Russian position to him.
That would give Russia almost all of Donbas, a region that encompasses Ukraine's eastern industrial heartland and that Putin has long wanted.
