Netherlands to send Patriot air defense systems to Poland

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

The Netherlands will send two Patriot air defense systems and about 300 troops to protect a military aid hub for Ukraine in NATO ally Poland, the Polish defense minister said today.

Earlier this week, a Russian-made drone crashed in a field in eastern Poland, raising concerns in that country about airspace violations during the war in neighboring Ukraine.

“Due to the developments in Ukraine, due to the current conflict and Poland’s role in logistically securing transfers to Ukraine (...), the Netherlands has announced support through systems to protect our airspace and air defense systems,” Wladyslaw Kosinyak-Kamisz said at a press conference, welcoming the Dutch decision.

The Netherlands announced yesterday that the Patriot systems will be deployed from December 1 to June 1 next year.

A military drone crashed into a cornfield in eastern Poland overnight Tuesday, scorching crops, shattering windows in nearby homes and further raising tensions at a time of heightened efforts to end the war in Ukraine. A prosecutor said today that the drone most likely came from Belarus, a close ally of Moscow that supports Russia's war in Ukraine.
