Olenik for Antena M: One big rally can break the regime, we expect more people on the streets and a change in the protest strategy from the fall

"Violence on the streets and police brutality are just one of the proofs that Aleksandar Vučić's regime has entered its final phase and the only thing that is currently keeping him in power is naked police force and brutal propaganda," said Aleksandar Olenik, a lawyer and vice president of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, for Antena M.

Our interlocutor states that what we can see on the streets across Serbia in recent days is terror and adds that the police are using force without reason.

“Without any legal basis and not with the aim of protecting public order and peace, but with the aim of intimidating citizens. That those who came will not come again, because force will be used against them. There is classic terror on the scene and it is only for the sake of preserving the power of Aleksandar Vučić. Citizens on the streets are the bearers of power, they carry sovereignty, so the state and courts should protect them and not use force to protect the party in power”, says Olenik.

He believes that from autumn the number of citizens on the streets will increase, as will the number of protests on a daily basis in Serbia.

“I hope that there will be no radicalization of the protests and this is already enough for Vučić to realize that he needs to call elections”, claims our interlocutor.

Non Paper says that Aleksandar Vučić's regime no longer has legitimacy

Dušan Janjić from the Forum for Ethnic Relations with a team of associates, drafted the Non Paper, or rather a draft proposal for a peaceful transfer of power in Serbia. The non-paper has provoked heated reactions from government representatives, from accusations of undermining the constitutional order to allegations that the document's proposals constitute the "third phase of the colored revolution in Serbia".

When asked why Janjić's non-paper has stirred up the current government in Serbia, Olenik replies:

"In the non-paper, it is clearly seen that the current regime has no legitimacy, that it is time for them to leave and they are being offered a compromise way to step down from power. The second thing that bothers them is finding a solution to return the state to the constitutional and legal framework, that scares them because the Vučić regime operates only on the basis of force and not the law and the Constitution", Olenik points out.

Vučić's statements should not be taken seriously, they embolden the SNS supporters, who are increasingly few in number

"There will be many more arrests, the state will win, we will bring order to our country, we will prosecute them faster, harder and more", are just some of the statements of the President of Serbia, who sternly sends a message about how everyone who opposes the current regime will fare.

Olenik believes that his statements should not be believed, and that they serve mostly to encourage SNS sympathizers.

"The support he had no longer exists. According to public research data, his support is declining, and the only question is how he reads that data. You cannot rule by force forever and the police have limited capacities. When we have protests in two or three cities at the same time, we see that they cannot prevent even one rally or act adequately. I claim that one large meeting can break the regime, but several smaller protests across Serbia cannot, and that has become clear to us and to them in the last few days. That is why we expect a change in strategy," he said. Olenik.
