A powerful explosion occurred in a multi-storey building on General Tyulenev Street in the southwestern part of Moscow.
According to unofficial information, the explosion was caused by gas, after which a large fire broke out that engulfed the apartments on the ninth floor of the building.
Parts of one floor reportedly collapsed, killing several people and injuring more than 15. Some of the residents were trapped on higher floors, from where they called for help through windows as firefighters tried to contain the fire and thick smoke.
According to local media and eyewitnesses on the ground, the fire quickly spread through several apartments, and emergency services are still searching the building. There is no official confirmation of the cause of the explosion, but there is speculation that it was a gas installation malfunction.
Russian authorities have not yet officially announced the number of dead and wounded, but more information is expected this evening.
