In the south of Italy, a few kilometers from Naples, increasingly intense ground movements continue in the area known as the Phlegraean Fields, where there are 19 volcanic craters. Residents are sleeping in rigged tents, and experts are worried that the so-called super volcano could erupt.
Campi Flegrei is a volcanic area formed 4,000 years ago that covers an area of 65 square kilometers, including the islands of Procida and Ischia, where there are 19 volcanic craters. In the last few months, the area has been subject to continuous raising and lowering of the ground, release of gases and earthquakes, reports N1.
An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was recorded this week, and is the strongest in the last 40 years. Because of him, the civil protection service erected tents and prepared an evacuation plan.
Experts believe that the fear of an eruption is justified and that citizens need to be prepared for that possibility as well.
What are the causes of earthquakes in this area of Italy?
A geophysicist from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Giovanni Macedonio told the media that the porous rock, located at a depth of three kilometers, inflates and grows at a temperature of 1,100 degrees of magma, which leads to frequent earthquakes. The rate of ground uplift went from one centimeter in January to two in April 2024.
The Phlegrean fields represent one of the biggest natural threats in Italy, a so-called supervolcano more dangerous than Mount Vesuvius, because more than 600,000 people live in the area.
The Italian government has set aside 500 million euros to secure houses in the area, and a decision is awaited on economic aid for families who want to leave the territory.
"We from civil protection responded immediately and put up tents in public places to provide accommodation for people who fled to the street. These tents will probably stay here because earthquakes are becoming more frequent and we want to be prepared," said an employee of the Civil Protection Service.
The Center for the Coordination of Responses to Urgent Issues of the European Union stated that they are carefully following the events in this part of Italy. They pointed out that the European Commission is ready to send assistance in case of natural disasters, as required by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, when one of its members is affected by a disaster.
Experts from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology expect new earthquakes, which according to their calculations will not be stronger than five degrees on the Richter scale.
Elon Musk and his "Space X" offered to help the Italian government with communications, which would be of great importance in the organization of aid. The company offers its Starlink satellites to protect Italy in case of major disasters or volcanic eruptions. For now, there is no official agreement between the Italian government and the owners of Tesla.
