Sarajevo was declared the best world destination for 2025, as chosen by the readers of National Geographic Travel.
"It's official: Sarajevo is our reader's choice winner for 2025," reads National Geographic's Instagram profile alongside the Best of the World 2025 list.
"The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to inspire curious travelers from all over the world, so it's no wonder that it is the convincing winner of this year's readers' vote. Sarajevo's centuries-old history is woven into its natural beauty like the Miljacka River, which flows under more than a dozen bridges, including the Latin Bridge and Skenderija, a pedestrian bridge built from the same materials as the Eiffel Tower, according to local stories," they wrote.
“History buffs can pay tribute to the city's resilience at landmarks like the Rescue Tunnel. Wine lovers can taste the famous local varieties žilavka, blatina or vranac. Adventurers can go river rafting, alpine skiing or hike to one of Europe's most magnificent waterfalls," they added.
How is the list created?
National Geographic Travel's Best of the World list recognizes "the most exciting destinations for the coming years."
National Geographic's team of editors, writers, photographers and researchers select destinations based on criteria such as sustainability, culture, nature, adventure and family experiences.
Then readers vote for those destinations and choose the best one.
