This morning, over Tel Aviv, the moment was recorded for the first time when two Israeli interceptor missiles from the Iron Dome system destroyed an incoming Iranian ballistic missile.
This is the first time that the Dome has been documented destroying ballistic missiles, and not just short-range missiles.
According to a senior Israeli intelligence official, in the last 24 hours, Iron Dome intercepted only 65 percent of the missiles fired from Iran, while the interception rate was about 90 percent the day before.
What is Iron Dome?
Iron Dome is an Israeli-American air defense system that has been operational since 2011. The system consists of radar units and launchers and is designed to intercept short-range missiles. According to official data, its effectiveness in intercepting threats is between 90 and 97 percent.
If it is determined that the missile will not hit a populated or strategically important area, the system does not intercept it.
The dome currently has ten batteries, each of which contains three to four launchers, and each launcher carries 20 Tamir interceptor missiles. Two interceptor missiles are usually fired for one attack. The price of one Tamir missile ranges from 40 to 100 thousand dollars, while the price of one battery is about 100 million dollars. The United States has so far invested more than 2.9 billion dollars in the development of the system.
