US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is set to visit South Korea on Monday, January 6, amid a political crisis in the country, a close US ally in Asia, South Korean authorities said on January 3.
Blinken will be received by his South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul and will discuss "the alliance between South Korea and the US, cooperation between South Korea, the US and Japan, issues related to North Korea, as well as regional and global challenges," the South Korean diplomatic statement said.
South Korea is a key ally of Washington in the region, but the country has been plunged into political chaos since President Yun Suk-yeol attempted to impose a state of emergency on December 3, AFP reported.
Yun was suspended after lawmakers removed him from office, and the same measure was taken against the prime minister who was acting president. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is currently holding the presidency.
