British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone about progress towards an economic agreement between their two countries, Downing Street announced today.
“The UK is working with the US on an agreement for economic prosperity, building on our shared strengths and our commitment to economic security, and as part of those discussions, the Prime Minister and President Trump discussed progress in those talks,” the Prime Minister’s spokesman said.
The conversation last night was “brief,” he added, without providing details about the conversation or the potential agreement.
Trump boosted British hopes last month during Prime Minister Starmer’s visit to Washington by announcing a US-UK trade deal that would not require tariffs.
According to British media, London could abandon its digital services tax, aimed specifically at American technology giants, to avoid new US tariffs and secure a trade deal with Washington.
British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves told the BBC yesterday that it was "normal for companies operating in the UK" to pay tax there, but she did not deny that the tax would be waived.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Starmer said today that the UK would continue to ensure that companies pay "their fair share of tax", including companies in the digital sector.
