U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday about ending the war in Ukraine, following positive negotiations between American and Russian officials in Moscow.
“We want to see if we can bring this war to an end,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, expressing optimism about potential progress.
Trump advocates for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted last week, despite continued airstrikes and Russian forces making advances in western Kursk. The Kremlin has not made a public statement yet but previously expressed “cautious optimism” through the U.S. envoy.
Top U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Mark Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Volz, acknowledged that challenges remain in achieving a ceasefire and a broader peace agreement. Volz emphasized that negotiations must be realistic, while Rubio noted that both sides would have to make certain compromises.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remains firm in his stance that Ukrainian sovereignty is non-negotiable and that Russia must withdraw from occupied territories, including Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine.
In an interview with Russian media outlet Izvestiya, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stressed that any peace agreement must include “strong” guarantees, especially regarding Ukraine’s neutrality and its non-membership in NATO—key demands Moscow has continuously repeated.
Despite ongoing fighting, Trump’s upcoming conversation with Putin could be a pivotal moment in efforts to end the three-year conflict.
