Trump: We'll change course if Russia is not serious about achieving peace

US President Donald Trump said today that he will know in two weeks whether his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is "pulling us" and said he will change course if he determines that Russia is not serious about achieving peace in Ukraine.

Trump declined to specify what actions he might consider to punish Russia, but indicated that possible new sanctions against Moscow could jeopardize the agreement. He stressed that his new harsh language towards Moscow should speak for itself, reports CNN.

"The words speak quite loudly, we are not happy with the current situation," Trump said.

When asked by reporters whether he believes Putin wants to end the war, the US president replied that he would be able to say more precisely in "about two weeks."

"We'll find out whether he's pulling us or not, and if he is, we'll respond a little differently," Trump said.

He added that he still believes that Russia "seems to want to do something," but hinted at uncertainty about how serious it really is about ending the war, and stressed that he must be careful about imposing new sanctions on Moscow in the midst of peace efforts. "I think I'm close to an agreement and I don't want to ruin it by imposing sanctions," he said.
