AUTHOR.M.J. GDNUS

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck Istanbul on Wednesday, Turkey's disaster agency AFAD said, Reuters reported, adding that this was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the city of 16 million people in recent years.

There was no immediate information about damage, but people were evacuated from buildings as the quake shook the city, located on the European and Asian shores of the Bosphorus Strait.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 12:49 local time, was in the Silivri area, about 80 kilometers west of Istanbul. It was at a depth of 6.92 kilometers, AFAD said.

Balcony Jump

The TGRT broadcaster reported that one person was injured after jumping from a balcony during the earthquake that struck during a national holiday in Turkey.

The AFAD is warning people in the affected area not to enter damaged buildings.

The German Geosciences Research Center GFZ said the quake had a magnitude of 6.02. It was at a depth of 10 km, the GFZ added.

This was followed by a series of aftershocks of around 5 on the Richter scale.
