The UK has confirmed that two of its fighter jets, in two separate incidents on Tuesday and Thursday, intercepted a Russian plane over the Baltic Sea near NATO airspace.
British Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian Ilyushin II-20M reconnaissance plane on Tuesday, the British Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
Two days later, two Typhoons intercepted an unidentified aircraft that had left Kaliningrad airspace, the ministry said.
Secretary of State for Defence Luke Pollard said that given the increase in Russian aggression and the number of security threats, Britain was stepping up its activities to reassure allies, deter adversaries and protect its own national security.
"The mission demonstrates our ability to operate side by side with Sweden, NATO's newest member, and to defend the Alliance's airspace wherever and whenever needed, making us safe at home and strong abroad," he said in a statement.
Russia did not immediately respond to the report.
