French President Emmanuel Macron said tonight, in his address to the public ahead of tomorrow's European Union summit, that we are entering a new era, because if an attack by a state on its neighbor can go unpunished, no one will be able to be safe anymore.
The Russian threat is real and it affects all European countries, not just Ukraine, Macron said, adding that Russia is doing everything it can to replenish its weapons stocks and increase defense spending, Index reports.
It would be crazy to just watch and do nothing, Macron said.
He pointed out that Russia had broken previous promises and guarantees and said that Europe must prepare, and he reiterated that France is ready to send its soldiers to Ukraine as a peacekeeping mission in the event of a ceasefire.
I want to believe that the United States will continue to be with us, but we must be prepared for the fact that it may not be, Macron said.
Speaking about tomorrow's European Council meeting, Macron said that it would be an excellent opportunity for European countries to commit to increasing defense investment.
"France must recognize its special status, because we have the most effective and efficient army in Europe," Macron said, recalling that France has nuclear weapons.
Macron assessed that France is uniquely positioned in Europe, thanks to its nuclear deterrence capability, and that it is open to talks on extending that protection to European allies, but he said that the final decision on nuclear weapons remains in the hands of the French president.
The French president also spoke about US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, and said that Europe must be ready to react if such a levy is imposed on the European Union.
