The bells of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris rang 88 times at 11 a.m. today in memory of Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88, and the Eiffel Tower will turn off its lights tonight in his honor.
"Eighty-eight strokes in 88 years of life," the cathedral service announced. Two masses will be celebrated for Pope Francis in the cathedral, at noon and at 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m., a prayer vigil will be held, according to the same source. A large portrait of the Pope is placed inside the cathedral.
The Eiffel Tower turns off its lights
The Eiffel Tower will turn off its lights tonight in honor of Pope Francis, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said, adding that she would propose naming a place in the city after him.
In a statement, Hidalgo praised the Pope's commitment to a Church that reaches out to the most vulnerable, his placing ecology at the center of spiritual and social concerns, and his commitment to welcoming refugees. Pope Francis died this morning at the Vatican at the age of 88.
