Ukrainian opposition leaders reject US proposal for elections during war

AUTHOR:M.J. GDNUS

Ukrainian opposition leaders have rejected a US proposal to hold elections during the war, following media reports of contacts between them and US officials, as well as after President Donald Trump called his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” for failing to organize elections, Reuters reports.

Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said today that his team was working with US “partners” to maintain support for Ukraine, but added that he opposed holding elections during the war.

In a written statement published on Telegram, Poroshenko said that elections should be held only after peace is achieved. He added that the vote should be held no later than 180 days after the end of the war.

Yulia Tymoshenko, another opposition leader, said her team is “talking to all our allies who can help secure a just peace as soon as possible,” and stressed that elections should not be held before that is achieved.

Politico reported on Wednesday that four senior members of Trump’s entourage had spoken with some of Zelensky’s political opponents.

The talks were with Tymoshenko and senior members of the party of Poroshenko, who was president from 2014 to 2019, Politico reported, citing three Ukrainian lawmakers and a U.S. foreign policy expert from the Republican Party.

The talks focused on whether Ukraine could quickly organize presidential elections, the report said.
